A Brief Biography of Sheriff Stephens

Born in 1952, Tyson Stephens grew up in Emanuel County where he graduated from Swainsboro High School with honors. He went on to graduate Cum Laude from the University of Georgia. He married Susan Fagler and made their home in Emanuel County where they have raised three children who have made them very proud grandparents. He and his family are members of the First Baptist Church in Swainsboro. 

First elected as an At-Large County Commissioner in 1982, he was later elected Sheriff of Emanuel County in 1984 and is presently serving his ninth term as sheriff. Sheriff Stephens is an active member of the Georgia and National Sheriff's Associations and the Georgia County Officers Association. Stephens was voted as "Sheriff of the Year" in 2000 by the Georgia Sheriff's Association.

Sheriff Stephens serves on the Board of Directors for the Georgia Sheriff's Youth Homes and is on the Board of Trustees for the Herrington Homestead Youth Home, located in Emanuel County. He is a past president of the Georgia Sheriff's Association and is a member of the Control Board of the East Central Drug Task Force.
